Vasily Konov, the head of the state-run R-Sport news agency, which controls accreditation stated, “Journalists using mobile phones to film athletes or spectators will be considered a serious violation and will result in cancellation of accreditation."
This seems odd. Why would they want to ban journalists from promoting the Olympic Games? It is just free advertising. Maybe they are trying to prevent the premature releasing of the results. However, wouldn't that just attract more viewers to tune in and witness the athletes win the gold themselves? It makes no sense.
There is no beneficial gain from banning journalists from using things like Instagram, Twitter, Vine and other social networking sites during the 2014 winter olympic games. They could only gain from the use of it. It has the potential to reach so many more people and let them know what is happening in Sochi, Russia.
I do believe banning twitter, instagram, and filming of the Olympics is the wrong way to go. I agree that these things help promote the Olympics and gets more people to watch the actually event. Technology has really changed the view of the Olympics and it should not be banned. Technology has made the Olympics bigger with people watching from their house and attracting more people to come watch for themselves.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand I see banning these things as a way of stopping cheating from going on. People do use technology to cheat and I could see that the people of the Olympics want to see someone win the gold the right way and not by cheating. I really am kind of surprised by the banning though. I think that people will still be able to get pictures out and twitter tweets out. It will not stop everyone from getting the results out before the events. Twitter always is a good tool to see how the athletes and spectators or coach's are feeling. It is giving the people who are back home in every country a way to see the emotions of everyone participating or watching the Olympics.
I also do believe banning Twitter, Instagram, and filming of the Olympics is the wrong way to go. It does help promote the Olympics and it gets more people to watch the event, but that benefits everyone. The people get entertainment out of watching the event, the television companies get viewers, and the social media companies get more traffic due to it. I also do not see how they plan on doing this. Journalists will not put up with not being able to bring there phones and tablets along with them. If journalists have their phones with them tweets, pictures on Instagram, and videos will still get leaked out. I do not really see how they could possibly be able to do this without losing the actually viewers at the events. I see it as more beneficial to the Olympics than actual harm because of all the advertising they get from social media. Social media has become a huge part of everyones everyday life and by having it on social media more people will be interested in it and want to watch it.
ReplyDeleteI believe that banning social media sites such as Twitting and Instagram and any sort of filming at the Olympics is not right. Almost everyone uses technology as a form of communication and it is a good way to promote things. People get excited when they get to see the Olympics in person and they want to talk about it and show people that they are actually there. It is some people's jobs to be on their phones and tablets in order to record the Olympics so that it will be able to be aired on television and they will not be happy about not being about to have any of these things with them. Journalists use social sites to help promote their name and get them known, so it is not right if they are not allowed to use Twitter, Instagram, or any other social sites. Social media is a huge part of everyone's life and I agree that we could lose interest if they are beginning to ban social sites at some events such as the Olympics.
