Heels: Really Worth it in the Long Run?

Heels have been around since 3500 B.C. Though they didn’t pick up fashion until the 1700s. Heels started out as a class status. Men along with women wore them. Now in recent times, worn for reasons from sex appeal to power; heels have become a prominent part of our culture mainly, for women. However, studies are now showing that heels are not as good as people would hope.

Wearing high heels can cause many health problems. Because of the constraint and difference in weight distribution the following can occur:
                *Sprains
                *Bunions
                *Corns
                *Ingrown toenails
                *Flat feet
*Plantar fasciitis (tear in the tissue on the bottom of the foot)
                *Achilles tendon injuries
Because of these various problems, there can also be problems with knees, hips and even backs.

Plantar fascia

So after learning about all of those problems that occur, why would anyone continue to wear them? This popular trend is not one that appears to be ending any time soon. The real reason? There are a few. Height is a very strong reason, women who have long legs are viewed to be more beautiful according to all the magazines and ads. Heels are the number one way to appear to have longer legs. Another reason is that they make women’s butts bigger. This happens because women have to adjust their weight by arching their backs to keep from falling forward. After reviewing all the facts, heels really aren’t physically worth the pain for what they appear to deliver.

Flash Flooding

 Flash Flooding

2013 Colorado flash flood where 14 inches of rain fell
in two days.

We don't see them coming, but we need to prepare ourselves for the situation of flash flooding. Flash flooding is the result of heavy rain, dam break, levee failure, or rapid snowmelt and ice jams. Flash floods are usually cause by heavy rainfall in a short amount of time. Flash flooding occurs in cities more often due to the fact that there is more concrete, so the rain can't soak into the ground. Flash floods come without warning most of the time. During flash flooding water levels will rise quickly within hours or minutes.
Colorado this week has had major flash flooding as a result of heavy rainfall in the are in the past several days. Rainfall totals in some areas of Colorado were 14 inches in just two days. This is 9 times the average rainfall for the total month of September for cities in Colorado. All this rain made the ground saturated so it could not hold any more water. The rain kept a falling, resulting in all the rainfall running into the rivers and streams in Colorado. All this rain running into the river resulted in significant rises in water levels. The rapid rise in water levels resulted in one manmade dam to break, which resulted in a wall of water to flow down the river. The water flowing down the river was moving fast, which engulfed whole towns and communities in matter of a couple hours. The fast moving waters washed away bridges, roads, trees, homes, cars, etc.. Lucky Colorado towns were told to evacuate before the rising waters. The Colorado flood has only claimed 3 lives so far.

My hometown of Steuben, WI 2008 flash flood where 10-12
inches of rain fell in two days.

Tips to keep you safe when flash flooding occurs:

  • Leave areas prone to flooding when a flash flood warning is issued and seek higher ground
  • Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways
  • Never play in flooded waters
  • If your car stalls, immediately get out
  • Unplug all utilities when evacuating your home
Turn Around Don't Drown!!!!!!

Monkeys With Herpes Invade Florida

Monkeys With Herpes Invade Florida

by Mitchell Jorgensen

You've probably heard of an invasive species before, but you've probably never heard about the monkeys with herpes invading Florida. There are about 1000 rhesus monkeys living in Florida and most of them have tested positive for the herpes B virus, and this has recently been named a public safety hazard.

The monkeys were brought to Florida in the 1930's to Silver River State Park to provide a more "Tarzan- like" experience. The monkeys were supposedly trapped on the island but the monkeys learned how to swim and swam to shore. The monkeys had reached as far as Jacksonville Florida which is over 100 miles away.

Herpes B doesn't do any harm to the monkeys but in humans it can cause neurological impairment and fatal inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. The monkeys are known to act aggressively towards humans and the states Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has told people in the area to be careful around the monkeys.

Over priced cables at Best Buy.

You go to the store to buy your new flat screen TV on sale and the person on the floor insists you need to buy premium cables to go with it. You came to the store to get a TV for cheap and now your being told you need a cable that often costs between $50 - $200. Do you buy it? Do you listen to this guy? No your being tricked into buying something that you don't need and doesn't matter.

Cables like these used to matter 10 years ago when they used analog signals. Today TV's use cables like HDMI that transmit signals in 1's and 0's (a digital signal) a cable can't make these 1's and 0's any more clear. A $5 cable on Amazon is just as good as the $250 one in Best buy.

So why do they try and sell you these? Don't they know better? Of course but they make much more profit selling you something useless.

Wrestling back in the 2020 games

Wrestling back In the 2020 Olympics

Wrestling being one of the first sports in the Olympics, wrestling should never been kicked out of the Olympics, dating back in 708 B.C. When the IOC was eliminated from the 2020 games, This shocked the wrestling community. Wrestling was not in 25 core sports due to the lack of viewers. But on Sunday,8 of September wrestling was reinstated back in the 2020 games.
Wrestling won out of baseball with votes up to 24 and squash had 22, wrestling won with 44. This was a very exciting day for the wrestling community. Being a wrestler myself this was a very crucial day for me, and would effect many things in my life.
Little do people know that wrestling is a sport where there is no real professional league after college. We wrestlers only have the Olympics to look forward too, it gives us a opportunity to represent more than ourselves but our country. If wrestling was eliminated permanently that this would effect the youth and destroy young athletes dreams. We would have a trickle down effect meaning if wrestling was never back in the Olympics, allot more college wrestling sport teams would drop there programs meaning less college wrestlers. This would effect high school wrestlers too then our sport would slowly die down.
Even though this should of never happened, we should be aware that our sport is sitting on a fine line. We must become better leaders and help preserve our sport. We can use this as a advantage because we can use the media attention to the IOC bringing wrestlers back in the Olympics, and direct it to the sport itself. With the new scoring in the Olympics with only one stalling warning and takedowns worth two wrestling should be more exciting for everyone. Thanks to the all help from twitter and the whole country we can say we have saved our sport for now, but we must always be aware of what happened and must move forward and improve everyday for our sport that we love so dearly.

Can Peyton Get His Ring?

With the NFL season under way plenty of teams are off to great starts, and plenty are off to not-so-great starts. One of the teams that has started the season 2-0 is the Denver Broncos, led by veteran quarterback Peyton Manning. So far, Manning leads the NFL with 9 passing touchdowns (tying the NFL record for the most touchdowns in the first two games of the season.)
Last year the Broncos were a favorite to win the Super Bowl, but their run was cut short by th eventual champion team, the Baltimore Ravens.

I believe that the Broncos can win the Super Bowl because as a whole, the team has a lot of experience. There are a lot of veterans on the roster, and all of those veterans have the ability and mentality it takes to be champions. Throughout the regular season, the Broncos will only play a few teams who should pose as a threat to them. I'm going to go out on a limb here, but not only do I believe the Broncos WILL win the Super Bowl, but I also think they can do it by losing 2 games or less. Will the best Manning to play in the NFL come out and prove it this year? We'll have to wait and see!

St. Cloud State Social Media

Whether you want to confess your true love anonymously or post an embarrassing picture of a drunken bystander, St. Cloud has a website for it. Run by St. Cloud State students SCSU Love Confessions is a page on Facebook where you can write about someone you are crushing on that week or try to find a date. The rather funny page has even been known to spark relationships between a few people. The cheesy page has attracted well over 2,000 people and growing.

"All i want is to find a girl who likes to cuddle, relax and watch movies, and who I can give my heart too. Message if you are a single girl who likes this!" -Post from SCSU Love Confessions

Another popular place to find everything ridiculous and entertaining amongst college students is on the twitter page OnlyInCloud. Followers send in tweets and pictures of anything from people in St. Cloud passed out in random places or something you just don't see everyday. This picture has forty-five of the nearly 6,400 followers crackin' up. #OnlyInCloud is a weekend favorite for all attenders and some students who don't attend.

Pay For Play?

A lot of attention has been brought up
about the the idea of college athletes being compensated for their play. The NCAA is making bank on athletes such as Johnny Manziel and Tim Tebow when he played. They get to use the players likenesses and sell merchandise with nothing going back to the athletes.

Yes, these athletes are getting their schooling payed for. But so are the kids with 4.0 GPA's and high test scores, and there not endangering their bodies day in and day out. Especially with the risks of concussions and such accidents as Eric LeGrands from Rutgers. Eric is now paralyzed from a football hit he made in 2010. Now for the rest of his life he lives with struggles none of us can comprehend.

With the risks of these sports and the demand we have on these athletes we should pay them in respect to the entertainment they provide. I think the NCAA could find some sort of compensation out of the
871.6 MILLION dollars they made in 2012.
